CERAMICS. Tis dangerous :/

:O So like the not-so-bad version of my worst fear kinda came true today. LET ME EXPLAIN! It's really not THAT bad.

Yesterday in Ceramics, the teacher showed us how to make slabs and built with them. He demonstrated with the downstairs slab roller because the one in the classroom was malfunctioning, and they operate differently anyway.
Part of our assignement was to prepare some leatherhard slabs for next class.
So I go in to the studio today to work on my stuff, and there's one other girl in the lab, so we get chatting. I decide I really don't want to go roll my slabs downstairs in the small claustrophobic room all alone. So I decide to try and use the upstairs slab roller, which got kinda repaired during the class. I got the other girl, whom I have seem operate this roller, to show me.

This thing, as opposed to normal slab rollers, only roll one way.
There was inattention and lack of communication on both our parts cause i was still arranging the canvas when she started rolling.
So my right index finger got caught in it.
And since this thing DOESN'T ROLL BACK, I had to wrench it out. That stuff is sanded, man.

Needless to say I panicked for a couple of seconds cause THAT HURT and IT DOESN'T ROLL BACK and hkhdka sdahslkskad I NEED THIS FINGER.
Some of the skin has been scrapped of, but apart for that, I think my finger is still structurally sound. It's moving and all.
It's been throbbing ever since tho. I feel no pain, and i have sensation in that finger, but it feels like the circulation isn't great. You know like when you have something wound way too tight over it? Is that normal? :/ I figure it'd bruise and all.

I felt really dizzy and nauseous for a little while after the initial pain subsided, but the other girl stayed with me and got be bandaged and stuff. She was really sweet and feels guilty, and I kinda feel bad cause it's really not her fault. :/ *hugs her*

SO YEAH. MY WORST FEAR IS OF COURSE LOOSING PROPER USAGE OF MY RIGHT HAND. That's why table saws and other woodshop tools scare the hell out of me. At least, it was only a roller. :/ Stupid dangerous unidirectional roller... >_>

But i'm fine. I got more scared than actually hurt... (is there an expression like that in english? I french it's Avoir plus peur que mal.)

I need to stop thinking about what could have happened if my hand had been cuaght furthe dasjd hask dh ok not thinking about that. Shit.

And, you know, don't let your fear take over your life or anything, but the fact that this is something you're worried about makes you more aware of the danger and more careful than you might otherwise be. So, I guess I'm saying, because you worry a lot, you don't have to worry too much? XD

my dad almost lost two of his fingers because of a piece of machinery at his old job
was malfunctioning and basically he was bleeding really badly when he came home and I had to patch him up enough to get to the doctors. His fingers are okay now after a bit of plastic surgery to fix what was nicked off.

Im a Certified Nursing Assistant.
I pretty much run after old people from 2-10pm (kind of like an over glorified babysitter or a mum) at a nursing home. Pay's okay, but not as great as some other places, but it does pay the bills.

OOOOh! That's cool. Well, I guess what I mean is I really respect this job. I've volunteered in a nursing home for 3 months working with the activities department, so i've seen a lot of the job you do. Yeah, sometimes it does seem like a glorified babysitter, but those people depend on your kindness, and I appreciate that nurses/nursing assistants offer this kindness, even as a job.
I guess i'm kinda sensible to this too since my gramma has just been placed in a home... :/

there that basically we cannot help in the long run and are just there for the drugs :/.

DDD: i would have been screaming and panicking a lot I AM GLAD YOU ARE OKAY. and if the finger feels weird i'd take it to see a chinese doctor because they have nice things for aiding blood circulation etc etc. like when i sprained my wrist, and the chinese doctor gave me awesome stick-on patches that made the pain go away, so i could bend my wrist properly again :D

Still a little numb, but better than yesterday. Yesterday night i could still feel the phantom pain of having it stuck, and it scared me.
I'll wait a few days and see how that goes. Seeing a doctor in QC is famously difficult, especially now with swine flu and stuff >_>
