Ceramics rambling warning!
RAKU IS STILL THE BEST THING IN THE WORLD!! \0/ \0/ We did like 3 loads of firings today and some of my pieces turned out sooo good!! *_* I need to take pictuures! *0*
Totally worth the week of getting up at 6am to go work on ceramics! X3 *flails*
My grandma also really liked my bird-head piece, which makes me really happy! She has very traditional and "fine" taste when it comes to art, so i wasn't sure how much she would appreciate ceramic pieces. I'm glad she likes it! ^-^

In other news, i still fail at catching up on my fic-reading. :(
And i still need to work on the exchange pics.

How is it different from regular ceramics? Is there a different way you fire the clay? I took a clay sculpture class and had a blast.

It's part of "regular" ceramics. Raku is simply a specific Japanese firing method that is pretty fast and intense.
You can use the same clay (we're using stoneware, the grey clay) but fire it several different ways. Depending on how you fire it and which glazes you use, the results can be super different.
We also do sawdust firing (bury the dry pieces in a can full of sawdust and let it burn, the pieces come out all black and mat) and regular electric kiln firings(we are doing bisking only for now, so pieces come out pinkish, ready to glaze, but unfinished as a whole).
I guess it just depends if your school has the facilities to do Raku.

I took an Asian Art History class in which we studied a whole bunch of raku pieces, but we mostly focused on the historical significance rather than how it was created. Well, how it's created does have historical significance, of course, but we never went in depth with it. It's a shame 'cause I was going to do a research paper on raku, but then the paper was canceled.

I've only ever done bisking (and glazing...duh). I suppose it was rather ethnocentric of me to think of it as "regular" ceramics. Heh. :)

I'm almost sure my school does. In fact, I'm pretty sure the teacher is a pretty renowned raku artist. What is up with all these famous teachers? XD
