Just great. I work my ass off drawing for the portfolio, and what does my teacher tell me? That I'm a bit "heavy on the drawing"! >___> *rolls eyes* No shit! That's what I do!! xD
It's true that I have almost no conceptual pieces though. It's not my fault I don't take satisfaction in abstract slabs of color and form... O_O

LOLCRAP~ XDDD Mom's been nagging at me to send a greeting the family in China, hence... *pokes*

Lol, but your art teacher might be right. I know it sounds stupid and everything, but in a port-folio, even if that *is* what you do, it's not what the people looking at it will want. The easy way to say it is that you only need to prove you can do it once. If most of your port-folio is drawings of the same kind, then half of it is useless. Those guys are going to check out thousands of portfolios, having one repeating itself over and over? Not interesting. So after you've proved it by one or two drawings, then you need something else - however good you are at the first media, you've shown it already, now what?

Really, it's also not so much about the drawing by about the media and the kind. For instance, 5 really good anime pictures = good, but a bit dull after the second one. Now, let,s take 5 others drawings, but the first is a charcoal portrait, the second is a scenery painting, the other is watercolour cat, the next's an inked perspective building shot and the last is a computer-made anime picture. They are all drawings of a sort, but so much more interesting than the previous portfolio. They reach a large selection of mediums and subject both, and you've prove that you can adapt and learn and is curious about everything, and eager to try it out. Half of them can suck; it's not exactly the point.

If you show a spirit, determination, and eagerness to learn? Better than someone gifted who only seem to know how to do one thing and do the same one over and over without trying anything else.

Of course those are gross exageration, and I'm pretty sure you had diversity already in your port-folio. Only, when I wanted to do mine, what you got is the kind of answer my teacher gave me. I didn't understand it the right way until university really forced it deep into my skull with a power-engined hammer. Sewing, 3-d modelling, art and theater shows, flash animation, web-site design: everything you can do, throw it in. Don't limit yourself to what you are good at- those are two entirely different matters. What you aren't good at you can learn; what you don't wish to even look at you won't. That's their point of view.

Anyway, sorry for the rant, but I think this is what your teacher meant. ^^;;; They just suck at explaining it, I hope I did it better. Good luck with it! =D

That new year card looks really cute: you totally could pass it off as a greeting card. Plus family members always like what's been made by their kin more- that way they can show off to neighbors. ^0^
Happy new year again~ ^^

You've been practicing your chinese inks, have you not? Put that in. =)
Bookmarks pictures too, maybe. Even if they are drawings still, you've *done* something with them, and it'll give a 'commercial' vibe. Have you tried sewing? Make-up? Pottery? Or try to scrap-book the port-folio as well, to give it more design than simply pages of the same style and color (unless that is the style in itself that you would want). Find something tht you want to show off more - for instance you re a very colorful person, so bright, happy stuff a bit around could help give off your personality through the folio, and personalize it further up. ^_~ Talk about it with your art teacher, she knows more than I do by far. (no experience here, just lotsa advice summarized lol )

Phhsssttt, they should be expecting it. After all, we have a reputation as the "artsy" branch of the family :P They'll have to deal with it, it's not like manga was rare in china anywayz xDDD

It's so cute! (Nee, how do you have time to be portfolio-ing, lj-ing, and still pass cegep??)

Cegep requires about three extra hours of my time weekly apart from class time right now. (but not for long T_T) The rest goes to portfolio-ing.
I ... manage~ xDDD

I was scrolling through my flist with my mom sitting on my bed, doing some money counting thing, and she saw your pic. She said it was cute. ^o^ It DOES look like a greeting card design.

*pets* I don't know anything about art portfolios and things... but I think it is natural to want to put in things you're good at. Work hard on it, I'm sure it'll turn out fine. ^______^

I can totally see this as a pattern on mass-produced red pouches being handed out somewhere in Hong Kong for the Chinese New Year, because it's really that good. X3

And, [livejournal.com profile] yue_ix pretty much said everything that I may have thought of saying to your problem about the portfolio. Not that I would have thought of any good advice. I don't exactly have the greatest art sense around here. +_+
